For each KPI, specify five elements: owner (who’s accountable), formula (how it’s calculated), grain (daily/weekly/monthly), target (what good looks like), and refresh cadence (when it updates).

The key insight is to focus on leading indicators you can influence, not lagging outcomes you can only measure. If you can’t change the inputs, tracking the outputs is an exercise in futility.

Step 3: Verify your data 

Before designing in Microsoft Fabric/Power BI, audit what’s available. Inventory your sources, check grain alignment across systems, and assess latency and quality risks.

Map out join keys, identify data gaps, and surface compliance constraints.

Decide early what is “good enough” versus a show-stopper. If your decision requires daily granularity but core data refreshes weekly, choose between changing the timeline or accepting the constraint.

Step 5: Prototype the narrative before building the dashboard.
